Conference Schedule Monday, October 20
8:00-8:30 am | Breakfast | 8:30-10:45 am | Welcome, Opening plenary & World cafe dialogue: Breaking the Poverty Cycle: Is Education Reform the Answer? As education funders, we can agree that inequities continue to exist in society today—that poverty in this country is to a large degree intergenerational, and that many students enter the education system at a gross disadvantage. We likely also can agree that access to a high-quality education is critical in breaking the cycle of poverty. Yet is education alone the great equalizer? Can great schools overcome the effects of poverty – and if so, then how? At our opening plenary dialogue, hear three smart, passionate education analysts debate the evidence about whether our education system can close the achievement gaps —and which out-of-school supports and other social and economic policy levers might be equally or even more important than education reforms in both closing the gap and in alleviating poverty. Following their dialogue, you’ll have a chance to reflect in a round robin World Café conversation that kicks off a thought-provoking start to your conference experience—and to our collective learning.
