Program
With high-stakes testing driving the educational future of all children, grantmakers must find new ways to help children reach third grade performance benchmarks and establish a strong foundation for future learning. Increasingly, elementary schools are recognizing that they can't afford to work in isolation and are aligning their instructional strategies with pre-kindergarten programs – particularly in schools serving the most disadvantaged students. As grantmakers, we can better leverage our investments by helping to make these connections.
This briefing provided funding and program models through which foundations from a diversity of sizes, regions and scopes can advance PK-3 alignment. It featured discussions with forward-looking school leaders, researchers and funder colleagues, as well as a site visit to Pershing Elementary School in south Chicago.
