GFE Eleventh Annual Conference
10/17/2007 to 10/19/2007
New Mexico, Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort

How can we help transform an outmoded 19th century education system into one that prepares all students – especially those who are most disenfranchised – to thrive as global citizens? At GFE’s 2007 conference, we took a fresh look at this question using the Southwest as our vantage point. Poised near the U.S.-Mexico border, we learned from a region that has a long history of living and thinking beyond borders. The program offered insights on a range of education issues – from early education and after-school programming through K-12 schooling and higher education.

  • We learned from examples of powerful, 21st-century learning occurring in urban, rural and tribal settings, during and outside the school day.
  • We considered ways to walk many different pathways toward a common destination – adapting educational approaches to build on unique community and cultural assets while striving for common high outcomes.
  • We challenged ourselves to move outside of our usual ways of working, turning to new partners – including young people and community members – to join us in adapting our education system for a global era.
  • And we reflected on how “place” – the unique history, people and institutions of the place where we work – influences our efforts as grantmakers.
