Donors investing to improve public education face important challenges. Yet, when approached wisely, we know that philanthropy—regardless of its scope or size—can change schools, systems and the lives of students for the best. To help grantmakers achieve greater focus and impact, GFE designed a new toolkit, Improving Public Education, and we also launched the Roadmap to Results series of web seminars to expand on these themes. Both were designed to help grantmakers and donors clarify their own goals, priorities and capacities for giving to public education and to suggest better ways of knowing whether their gifts accomplish the results intended.

Roadmap to Results was structured as a series of 3 online web seminars. These seminars, and the companion toolkit, were useful to both emerging grantmakers and more experienced ones taking a fresh look at their work. You had the option to participate in an individual seminar or in the whole series.

  1. Session One: Fundamentals of Change
    (Tuesday, June 12 at 10am PT / 1pm ET)
This session encourage us to think about the "mechanics" of more strategic philanthropy in public education: where to work, how to give and why we think our efforts will make a difference.
  2. Session Two: Levers of Change in the Public School System
    (Thursday, June 28 at 10am PT / 1pm ET)
This session focused on unique considerations for funders working to improve outcomes in the public education system: working inside vs. outside the system, scope (especially for smaller foundations), and acute needs where philanthropic work can most make a difference.
  3. Session Three: Leverage and Impact
    (Thursday, July 12 at 10am PT / 1pm ET)
This session helped us consider how to leverage our efforts to achieve a greater impact, and it suggested ways of gauging our impact and knowing what our grantmaking has accomplished.
