Case Study Seminar on Effective Grantmaking Practices
Social Change, Funder Collaboration and the Achieving the Dream Partnership
3/10/2008
San Francisco, CA, Palace Hotel

Special GFE-sponsored pre-session at Grantmakers for Effective Organizations National Conference
Monday, March 10, 9:30 am - noon

Registration for this program is now closed.

Just three years after it began, Achieving the Dream — a nationwide initiative supported by many funders — far surpassed its partners' goals to begin improving the success rates of minority and low-income students in community colleges. But it also struggled with critical questions about next steps.

Part of Grantmakers for Education's unique-to-field case study series on effective grantmaking, this seminar used the Achieving the Dream initiative to help grantmakers of all sizes reflect on the tough work of managing social-change initiatives, ways of involving and getting buy-in from partners with different missions and agendas, and how national and local funders work together.

This highly interactive seminar was led by an expert case study instructor. Space was limited to ensure active discussion, and participants were expected to read a case study in advance. With the exception of concluding observations from one of the protagonists in the case, the session ran as a traditional case study seminar with no panel discussions but instead with guided discussion questions and intensive audience engagement in analyzing the scenarios presented.

Case leader:

  • James Honan,
Senior Lecturer on Education Harvard Graduate School of Education

Respondent:

  • Leah Meyer Austin,
Senior Vice President - Program Development and Organizational Learning Lumina Foundation for Education
