8:30–9:30 am | CLOSING KEYNOTE: Promise, Power and Purpose: What Communities Bring to the Reform Table Calvin O. Butts, III, the influential pastor of the Abyssinian Baptist Church, understands that students’ lives don’t stop and start at the school doors. He’s devoted much of his life to building prosperity among his congregation and Central Harlem community—helping bring numerous community development projects to the neighborhood through the Abyssinian Development Corporation arm of the church; helping build strong local schools, including founding the first new public school in Harlem in 50 years; and, as both pastor and as president of the State University of New York College at Old Westbury, encouraging the youth in his reach to aspire to their highest ambitions. In his conference closing remarks, he’ll reflect on the promise of community partnerships and the power of expectation in helping students achieve—and challenge us to remember our purpose for coming together and doing the work that we do.
