Using the Science of Reading to Teach All Learners

The Hunt Institute

Virtual

Throughout the last 40 years or so, there have been tens of thousands of studies into teaching and learning reading in multiple languages and countries. The science of reading is the converging evidence of what matters and what works in literacy instruction. This body of research has shown that, in order to be effective, evidence-based early literacy instruction should be tailored to the specific needs of the student. This research has also shown that English learners, as well as students with disabilities, benefit from the same essential components of literacy instruction as their peers, but they also need additional supports, such as a focus on oral language development and intentional phonological awareness instruction. The growth and success of all students is vital to the future success of the communities in which they will one day live and work. Join us for this important conversation about how the science of reading and evidence-based early literacy instruction ensures that all students have access to the necessary resources to thrive in the classroom and beyond.
