ECS Live: Innovative Policies for Strengthening the School Leader Pipeline

Education Commission of the States

Virtual

School principals play a critical role in shaping school culture, improving teacher retention and driving student success. Yet states across the country are facing growing challenges in recruiting, supporting and retaining effective school leaders, particularly as the role becomes increasingly complex and demanding.

This interactive session will explore innovative policies and strategies designed to strengthen the school leader pipeline and sustain effective school leadership. State leaders from Kentucky, Delaware and Louisiana will share how they are addressing these challenges through leadership development efforts and policy reforms.

Participants will explore:

  • Research on the impact principals have on student outcomes, educator retention and school climate.
  • How states are strengthening leadership pipelines through data-informed policy, district partnerships and targeted investments.
  • Policy levers such as leadership standards, licensure, preparation programs and professional learning.
  • Practical strategies to recruit, prepare, support and retain effective principals, particularly in high-need schools.

Attendees will leave with actionable lessons, promising practices and ideas they can adapt to strengthen school leadership pipelines in their own states.
