Philanthropy and HBCUs – A Closer Look at Who’s Giving BLACK
August 2, 2023, 12:00 pm ET
In the Spring of 2023, Association for Black Foundation Executives (ABFE) and Candid released a comprehensive research study that contributes to the philanthropic community’s ongoing assessment of disparities in giving to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). “Philanthropy and HBCUs: Foundation funding to historically black colleges and universities” examines the institutional giving-gap and disparities in foundation support to HBCUs in comparison to Predominately White Institutions (PWIs) of learning. Published in partnership with Candid, the study not only sheds light on the challenges Black institutions face but serves as a call to action for greater investment, philanthropic support, and increased prioritization of HBCU giving from foundations and grantmaking entities.
Conducted in partnership with ABFE and Grantmakers for Education, the webinar aims to both share the undeniable truths revealed through the findings of this report and aid in charting a collaborative and equitable path forward, whereby Black institutions of learning receive equal funding consideration and sustained financial support. Led by ABFE’s President and CEO, Susan Taylor Batten; with contributions from ABFE’s Chief Development Officer, Cory Witherspoon, Candid’s Sr. Director of Research, Dr. Cathleen Clerkin, and ABFE’s Director of Programs, Dr. T.J. Breeden; the funder briefing is intended to not only inform the philanthropic community on the qualitative and quantitative insights captured during the study, but to invite funders to explore collaborative solutions for combatting the disproportionate, financial marginalization of Black colleges and universities. Please join us on August 2nd, as we seek to transform research findings into action, and explore strategies designed to help our historically Black institutions, and their students, thrive.
