Four Questions to Ask Yourself
As the education sector prioritizes equity, we have a responsibility to not only shift mindsets and power structures, but also our vocabulary. Our education lexicon is replete with deficit-based language such as "at-risk" and "marginalized": it is embedded in our laws and regulations, in our procedures and descriptions, in our grant initiatives and reporting. It's time to take a racial justice lens to our internal and external communications to ensure that we are not perpetuating bias and racism.
Join a candid conversation with leaders in justice communications, Trish Millines Dziko of Technology Access Foundation and Melia LaCour of Becoming Justice, moderated by Cindi Williams of HCM Strategists and Learning Heroes, regarding the consequences and impact of deficit-based language and the fields’ anxiety around using the “right” words during this highly politicized moment. The conversation will be complemented with information that provides an action-oriented framework and rationale for shifting to asset-based language. Attendees are encouraged to ask questions of the panelists as we explore language and build skills to become a critical part of the shift.
