Understanding the Impact of Grieving and Loss on Young People & Ways to Respond: Out-of-School Time Stakeholder Convening

Child Bereavement Estimation Model helps us understand/raise awareness of childhood bereavement; 2022 data: 7.7% of all youth (1 in 13 youth will experience death of caregiver) & varies by state & demographics.

Large gaps across county in services for bereaved children.

Need to address acute needs related to grief but also long-term support as grief is not a linear process.

Mentoring important for long-term support; however, there are not many trauma-informed mentoring models.

Stigma associated with COVID & parental death.

Need to equip staff with the language to help young people experiencing grief and know how/when to refer to other services.

Grief is not an illness – most children & adults have a “normal” adaptive grief response; need to create space and support for that process.

Pre-COVID data showed that 1 in 14 children would experience losing a parent or sibling to death before the age of 18. If not supported, grief can have a serious impact on learning, academic performance, social withdrawal, and behavioral health. The pandemic illuminated this common yet overlooked public priority and added new layers of grief and loss to young people’s day to day experience.
