Topic: How Afterschool Programs Support and Develop Positive Racial, Cultural & Gender Identities

This month, we’ll hear from Dr. Deepa Vasudevan who, in partnership with a team of researchers, conducted a literature review and set of interviews to identify major challenges to—and leading practices toward—equity in out-of-school-time programs. The report, titled From Access to Equity: Making Out-of-School Time Spaces Meaningful for Teens from Marginalized Communities and supported by the Wallace Foundation, suggests that programs introduce practices that foster “a genuine sense of dignity and belonging for youth” and improve working conditions for program staffers. We’ll also learn about a related research project, carried out by high school and college students, that examines young people’s views of equity in and access to out-of-school-time programs.

Several practitioners will offer reflections and make connections to their work sharing how their programs foster young people’s positive racial, cultural, and/or gender identities. Programs to be highlighted include Maven YouthChicago Urban League, and Cheyenne River Youth Project.
