How Afterschool Helps Close the Opportunity Gap: A Look at Longitudinal Data

Join the EdFunders Out-of-School Time Impact Group as we delve into evidence from a 26-year longitudinal study that examines the connection between children’s access to cumulative opportunities in- and out-of-school across three developmental periods (early childhood, middle childhood, adolescence) and opportunities of upward economic mobility. Spoiler alert - participation in high-quality afterschool activities is a key component to closing the opportunity gap for low-income youth. Dr. Deborah Vandell from the School of Education at University of California, Irvine will share insights from this pivotal study, and we’ll discuss how the field can utilize this data to make the case for high-quality OST programming for youth.

Speakers:
  • Dr. Deborah Vandell, Chancellor’s Professor Emerita, Education, School of Education, University of California, Irvine
  • Ursula Helminski, Senior Vice President, External Affairs, Afterschool Alliance
  • Suzette Harvey - President/CEO, Prime Time Palm Beach County
  • Dr. Terri Ferinde, Partner, Collaborative Communications
